Admin History: In the 18th and early 19th centuries the Stephenson family were mostly yeoman farmers and small tradesmen of the Beverley area. From the 1820s onwards however, the family became better known as seed crushers and brewers through the establishment of two seed crushing companies (Robert Stephenson and Sons of Hull Bridge, Beverley, and Messrs J and J Stephenson of Glasshouse Row, Wilmington, Hull,) and the management of The Golden Ball Brewery, Toll Gavel, Beverley. The family also produced pillars of the community in John Stephenson, who became Mayor of Beverley 1886-1887, and local surgeon Dr William Stephenson 1840-1911.The family papers were compiled by William Hugh Stephenson, 1873-1958, who was also a prominent figure in the community. He was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1917, became president of the Hull Chamber of Commerce and Shipping in 1929, was appointed governing director of Messrs J and J Stephenson 1936 before selling the company to the British Oil and Cake Mills in the same year, and was also made a director of the East Hull Gas Company 1936. In addition to being a successful businessman, William Hugh Stephenson was actively involved in charity work. He was a trustee for the 'Joseph Rank Pension Fund for poor people of good character', and Honorary Treasurer of Hull Victoria Hospital for Sick Children, Park Street, Hull. He retired at the age of 64.

Custodial History: Many of the records were collected together by W Stephenson in the 1940s and retained by the family until deposit with this office.
